Sunny Days (Conclusion)

“I thought there’d be more people than this,?Donnie muttered to Craig as they took their seats. They were in a classroom in Springdale High School. Including him, Keisha, Craig and Sheryl there were about a dozen couples in the room.

“No, it’s just for potential new residents and their sponsors,?Craig said. “We only invite a few couples a month. To tell you the truth, I think this is a pretty big crowd. We only had two new families move here last month.?

Donnie frowned. “So most people sign up for this deal??

“There’s nothing to sign up for, other than the orientation classes,?Craig said. “Those are mandatory. Other than that you just move in. Hold tight Cuz, everything will be explained.?

The speaker was a man named Jack Anderson. He picked up on what Craig had been telling Donnie over the phone last weekend:

“America has been poisoned,?Jack said. “Our country is infected with a cancer that’s been festering and growing for the past forty years. The cancer is apathy. The cancer is crime. The cancer is immorality. The cancer is racism. The cancer is poverty, and the cancer is greed ?corporate and individual greed. The cancer is the loss of good, clean values. The government can’t cure this cancer. In spite of all its posturing and its promises, the government is so lost in its own futility and its subservience to corporate influence that it is no more effective against what ails our nation than a fly swatter is against a horde of locusts.

“Well, we in the Sunny Days Corporation are dedicated to eradicating that cancer, to bringing the good America back to the people. We are going to cure the disease that threatens to kill our nation, and we’re going to cure it one family at a time, one neighborhood at a time, and one city at a time. Springdale is just one of over three dozen communities throughout the country founded by The Corporation. We, ladies and gentlemen, and you ?if you choose to join us - are the white cells in the American bloodstream. We are the cells that fight the disease. We are multiplying every day, and we will not stop until every man, woman and child in our great nation is a part of and can realize the American Dream.?

Someone in the back said, “Excuse me…”

Jack acknowledged him. “Yes Rick??

“That all sounds noble, Jack,?Rick said. “But what’s on my mind right now is how the merchants in this town are able to sell goods so cheap. They’ve got to be losing money. To me, this all sounds too good to be true, and you know what they say about that.?

Donnie was glad that this Rick dude asked the question, because it was on his mind too.

Jack smiled at the room. “A very good question, Rick, and one I was going to address. But let’s get to it right now.? He walked around the desk and sat on its edge. “The Sunny Days Project is subsidized by a group of individuals who believe that we have to find a new way to save our nation. They believe this strongly, and are so dedicated to our cause that rather than just give it lip service, they provide funding that allows us to purchase goods from manufacturers, but to eliminate the corporate mark ups to our local vendors. You see, The Corporation’s goal isn’t to make money, but to provide our citizens with a better way of life.?

“But who are these investors??Donnie asked.

“Not investors, Donnie. Our benefactors aren’t doing this for profit. They are truly dedicated to the dream. But since you ask, I’ll drop a few names. How about Intelsoft chairman Will Bates? Or talk show host Ophelia Wingard? Or pop superstar Mikey Johnson, formerly of the Johnson 5, and billionaire Darren Ruffett? They’re just a few of the dozens of our benefactors. And that list is growing.?

Rick said, “But if these people keep sinking money into this project, they’ll eventually go broke. That doesn’t make sense, Jack.?

“Our goal is to eventually make every community self-sufficient,?Jack said. “Imagine that one day our grocery stores are supplied by Sunny Days Farms. Our clothing stores sell merchandise manufactured not by companies who use cheap slave labor in third world countries, but by American owned businesses employing American workers on American soil. And those workers can afford to live on the salaries paid because they live in one of our communities.?

“I have a question, Jack,?Donnie said.

“Fire away Donnie,?Jack smiled.

“That makes sense up to a point,?Donnie said. “But when you break it all down, eventually it’s going to get down to the price of energy. You can make a city almost one hundred percent autonomous, but not completely. You’re always going to need energy. And I can’t imagine that you’ll get the oil companies to buy into this, because they don’t control oil prices. That’s determined by OPEC.?

Keisha was looking at him with her mouth hanging open. Donnie knew that she hadn’t ever heard him talk this way.

“Donnie, that’s an excellent point,?Jack said. “You’re right ?when it gets down to it, energy is the key.? Jack smiled at the room. “This is the best ?the greatest thing about our vision. How does it make you feel to know that the communities of the Sunny Days Corporation are the first to be completely powered by solar energy??

The men were required to take an aptitude test for job placement, after which they received training in a career field related to the areas in which they scored the highest. The men typically had a choice of two to four career positions, based on available openings. They were also required to attend courses in financial management, to ensure they could responsibly manage their household finances.

Keisha didn’t give a damn about what the men had to do. What pissed her off was that to get in on this deal, all the women had to attend a five week orientation training at some place called The Sunny Days Women’s Academy. Keisha wasn’t feeling having to go to anybody’s school, but had no choice in the matter. If she wanted the goodies, she had to play by the rules.

So here she was sitting in her “homeroom?trying to pay attention to Mrs. Mayfield, the school headmistress talking about women who work and kids, or some such shit.

“The Sunny Days Corporation agrees with the findings of The Institute of Social and Economic Research, whose findings state that the children of full-time working mothers in a two parent home fare no better in life than the children of single parent homes,?Mrs. Mayfield said. “The study found that the children between one and five whose mothers worked for the longest periods tended to have lower educational attainment, greater risk of unemployment as a young adult, and a greater risk of psychological distress.

“So the reason that we require that our mothers not work is not because we don’t believe that we are equal to men or don’t belong in the workplace, but that our children suffer without a mother’s care and nurturing during their formative years.?

Keisha’s mind wandered as Mrs. Mayfield babbled on. ‘Who does she remind me of??She asked herself, and then stifled a giggle when she realized it was Betty Crocker.

Mrs. Mayfield must have heard her because she shot a glance her way. But then she went back to her lecture.

“This is why one of the courses we provide at the academy is called Parenting and Nurturing,?Mrs. Mayfield continued. “Of all the things we do today and will accomplish in the future, the absolute most important is the raising of our children to become happy, productive citizens.?

Keisha looked back as some brown-nosing bitch raised her hand and asked, “What other classes will be attending??

Mrs. Mayfield flashed a slide that listed:

Culinary Arts
Housekeeping
Feminine Etiquette
Fashion and Hygiene
Family Fitness
Parenting & Nurturing
Marital Intimacy

“Your purpose ladies, is to truly be a helpmate and partner to your husbands,?Mrs. Mayfield explained. Your husband’s responsibility is to provide for and protect your home. Yours is to take care of your home and nurture your children.?

“Hold up,?Keisha said. “It sounds like to me the men get off easy. They just go to work and chill at the office, and we gotta cook, clean, raise kids and do all this other shit up there on that slide. To me this sounds like some scam to let men get over.?

Mrs. Mayfield smiled at her. “Keisha, you are more than welcome to disagree or debate. I’m confident that we will be able to convince you over the next few weeks to change your opinion. But one thing that isn’t welcome here and that we won’t tolerate is inappropriate language from a lady. It’s very ugly, dear.?

Keisha stood up and shoved her chair back. “Fuck that, I ain’t doin?this shit,?she said. “I’m out.?

“Keisha, why would you want to leave and give up all that we offer??Mrs. Mayfield asked.

“Because you’re up in here trying to turn women into slaves, that’s why. Who the fuck wants to be cooking and cleaning every fucking day??

“We do not create slaves, dear. We provide you the skills necessary to become an active partner in your household, and a proactive agent in raising a generation of well-rounded, productive citizens. This is a respectable and honorable role. It’s certainly not slavery. And I’m advising you again to watch your language.?

“And I’m advising you to kiss my ass,?Keisha snapped.

Mrs. Mayfield sighed. “Keisha, please take your seat. You did sign an agreement to attend our school. And think how Donnie will feel you leave. This affects him too, you know.?

“Fuck him and you, bitch. I said I’m outta here.?

Keisha weaved her way through the rows of seats toward the door. Mrs. Mayfield had a clearer path and beat her there. She stood in front of the door, blocking Keisha’s way.

Keisha stopped and laughed. “I know goddamned well you don’t think you’re woman enough…“

Mrs. Mayfield punched her in her stomach. Hard. So hard that her breath left her body in a loud whoosh. Keisha dropped to floor on all fours.

As she shook and hitched, trying to find some air, she felt Mrs. Mayfield kneel next to her. She looked at the woman through tear-blurred eyes.

“I’m a soldier,?Mrs. Mayfield said. “I will fight for my country, and I will destroy anyone and anything standing in the way of our goal. I will destroy you, Keisha. Oh, believe me I will. You’ve been offered a great opportunity. If you didn’t want it, you shouldn’t have come here. But you are here. And now, your ass belongs to me. Do we have an understanding, dear??

Keisha blinked back her tears and wiped at the snot bubbled growing out of her nostril. Mrs. Mayfield gripped the back of her neck and squeezed.

“Do we having an understanding??the headmistress repeated.

Still unable to breathe, Keisha nodded and let out a whimper. It was the only sound her depleted lungs allowed her to utter.

Two Months Later

“Keisha, I’m home!?Donnie called. He took off his suit jacket and draped it over the back of the sofa as he walked through the living room.

Keisha came in from the kitchen. “Hey baby,?she smiled.

“Something sure smells good,?he said. “What’s cooking??

“I thought I’d try something Caribbean,?she said. “So I’m making jerk chicken breasts and fried plantains.?

“Well it smells almost as good as you look, babe.? And Donnie meant that with every fiber of his being. He checked his wife out as he followed her to the kitchen.

Keisha wore an Egyptian pattern shift style mini dress and heels. Donnie always knew his baby had nice legs. But he’d never been more aware of it until recently, since she’d rarely worn dresses or skirts before their move. “Those shoes are hot, babe,?he added.

Keisha turned around, gave him a kiss and said, “You like these fuck me pumps? I ordered them from?oops!?

“What??Donnie asked.

“Profanity,?Keisha said. “Ladies shouldn’t use profanity. Sorry baby.?

“Hey, no problem,?Donnie said.

“No, it is a problem. I need to break that habit now, before we have kids. We don’t want our little ones picking up bad habits.?

“Yeah, okay ?good point,?Donnie said.

She put her hands on her hips and glared at him, and for the first time in many weeks Donnie saw traces of the old, arrogant Keisha.

“Donnie, you’re the man of the house,?she said. “I shouldn’t have to remind you of your responsibility to maintain order and discipline. You’re supposed to be in charge here.?

Keisha went to the utility closet and reached up on the top shelf. She returned a moment later carrying a leather paddle. She stepped to him and gave him another kiss.

As they kissed, Donnie felt her place the paddle in his hand. Then she whispered, “We have about a half hour before dinner is ready. Handle your business, baby.?
