A siren droned loudly, alerting all guards that a prisoner had escaped. They sprang to attention as Levi Colyer plunged into the darkness of the wooded area nearby. Soon he knew the dogs would be nipping at his heels. Her body ached with delicious longing to crawl back in bed, cuddle back against Chance’s larger body, and be held in his loving arms. With a lingering sigh, she stepped into the bathroom, flipped on the light, and shut the door behind her. Kaia gasped as she caught her reflection in the mirror. Faint black smudges circled her eyes, which were red and bloodshot. She let out a groan and cursed herself for freaking out in front of Chance the way she did. How could she have mistaken Chance for Levi? A warm glow and a gnawing ache coursed through her as she thought how great he’d been in helping her through it and how gentle he’d been when he’d made love to her afterward. She knew she’d found a real gem in Chance and vowed never to let him go. This was the man she wanted to spend her life with. With that conclusion she felt better. As she took one last look in the mirror, she hardly recognized the smiling girl who stared back at her or the flushed rosy glow on her cheeks. She had never thought she could be so happy or that her newfound happiness could be threatened. Quickly she stretched her body, holding her arms far above her head. As she stepped into the shower, she heard movement in the other room. Chance was awake also. Could he be fixing her breakfast, she wondered before she turned on the water and immersed herself beneath the exhilarating spray, shivering momentarily as part cold part warm water hit her bare skin. Her ears perked up as she heard the door open. “Hon, what would you like for breakfast?” Chance asked as he pulled back the shower curtain. “Just toast and cereal and orange juice,” she replied. “I’m not all that hungry.” “You’ve got it, babe,” he said as he reached in and kissed her, getting wet. Then he put the shower curtain back in its place, moving to the toilet to empty his full aching bladder. Kaia peeked her eyes through the crack in the curtain and watched him as he stopped at the sink to brush his pearly whites. She turned off the water and grabbed the sweet smelling bottle of shampoo. Still she watched Chance. Devilishly she pulled the curtain back to where she had full view of him. “Last night was incredible, Chance,” she purred as she lightly touched her silken flesh. “Yes, it was, my sweet,” he agreed. “You were perfect in every way.” “Nah, you were.” Chance gave her a knowing look. “Babe, you were perfect,” he repeated. “I have never felt anything like that.” “I almost thought it was too good to be true.” Kaia replied. He smiled, “My love, it’s not. I’m not. I am real. I am true and it will always be like that for us. I will always take the time to make it good for you,” he promised as he resumed brushing his teeth. It didn’t take long to finish her shower. Quickly she shampooed, rinsed, and conditioned while lathering her body with floral scented body wash. After her final rinse, she stepped out and found the towels he’d laid out for her. Kaia let out a dreamy sigh as she thought how sweet he was to do that for her. After drying herself completely and applying dusting powder, she opened the closet door and pulled out the garment bag containing her work clothes. She had chosen a black suit with a shimmery pink camisole beneath and strappy black heels. Over an hour later she walked out of the bathroom, ready for work. Her hair and makeup looked flawless. The suit she wore enhanced her curvy figure. “You look absolutely stunning, very beautiful.” Chance replied as his jaw dropped to the floor and his loins burned anew. He smiled, stepping toward her as he looked down at the dark blue V-neck sweater with a wide multi-colored stripe across the chest and denim cargo pants he wore. Kaia walked over to him and wrapped her arms around his shoulders as she gazed into his eyes. “You didn’t have to get up. I could’ve made my own breakfast.” “I know, but the alarm woke me up too,” he shrugged. “Plus it pleases me to do this for you. Enjoy it, dollface.” “I do.” “Besides, I’ll sleep later. I’ll probably go to the gym for a workout and give Christian a call. How are you getting to work?” “Bus. I have the schedule in my purse.” “Why don’t you let me take you?” Chance suggested. “I’d like that. That’s nice of you,” she said as she planted a soft kiss on his lips. “You smell so incredibly good. I may have to have you for breakfast,” Chance chuckled as he breathed in her sweet scent. “I like that perfume.” “It’s called ‘Captivated’!” “Oh baby, I am!” Chance teased. Kaia laughed at him, low and sensuous, and then moved to sit down at the bar. He handed her a bowl of cereal and two buttery slices of toast. “I could get used to such pampering.” “I hope so because you’ll getting a lot of it.” “I’ll give back to you as good as I get it!” Kaia promised. “I like that. 50/50, huh? That’s how it should be.” “Like last night?” Kaia pointed out as accepted a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. “Exactly like last night,” he agreed as he walked around the counter to sit with her at the bar. “Last night went far beyond my wildest dreams.” “That was only the beginning,” she promised with a sly smile. “There will be many more incredible nights in our future.” Chance cocked an eyebrow. “Yes, my sweet, but we don’t always have to make love for our time together to be incredible.” “I agree, darling.” “Good.” Chance said. “Would you like to have dinner with me after you get off work?” “Yes, I’d like that.” “Great. We’ll call it a date then. I’ll pick you up when you get off of work which is…when?” “Four-thirty.” “Four-thirty it is then.” Chance smiled, “You’d best finish your breakfast so you won’t be late. You’ll have to give me directions to where you work.” “I will,” she chuckled. “And I am eating. I’m gonna start calling you Mother Hen in a minute.” “Mother Hen?” Chance repeated, his eyebrow raising as his brow furrowed. “Yes, Mother Hen…only because of how well you’re taking care of me. I don’t mean it in a bad way, honey.” “Okay, I see now. Are you my little chick?” Kaia let out a sweet laugh, “Could be!” “Aahhhh!” he chuckled. “C’mon, chickadee, it’s time for you to go to work.” “I know. Back to the daily grind!” Kaia sighed heavily as she pulled on her ankle length leather coat and grabbed up her purse. “I’m ready.” “Let’s go.” Chance turned off everything, grabbed up his workout bag, and locked the door behind Kaia. “Honey?” he continued, “You do have a driver’s license, don’t you?” “Yes.” “I was thinking. I’ll let you have use of my Z-28 so you’ll have a car to get around in.” Chance generously offered. “You will?” Kaia questioned unbelievably. “Yes, of course,” he shrugged as he took her hand in his and walked beside her. “I can’t always be with you and I don’t know how often you’ll be staying here with me. I’d rather have you drive my car than walk or ride the bus.” “I know you’re concerned about me and I appreciate that. Thank you, Chance. I’d much rather drive. I’ve missed having my car.” Kaia bubbled. “Good, sweetheart, I’ll have a set of keys ready for you when I pick you up later,” he smiled as he led her to the car and unlocked the door for her, helping her in. As he slid in beside her, he leaned over to kiss her, sampling her sweetness tenderly. Then he pulled away as he started the car. He flashed a brilliant smile. “Are you going to stay with me tonight?” he asked, hoping she would. “Probably, but I do need to go home to get some more clothes. Plus I need to call my folks.” Kaia replied. “Good, I’d love to have you there. I’ll be at work, but you can hang out and wait for me. It’ll be so nice to have someone to come home to, someone to cuddle to after a hard night’s work,” he smiled. “I’d like that.” “Good, I’ll get you an apartment key and a set of keys for the Z-28. Oh, could I get you to do a favor for me?” “Sure, what?” “If I leave money and a list, could you go grocery shopping for me?” “Sure, Chance. I don’t mind. It’ll give me something to do.” “Thanks, dollface. I really appreciate it. I hate to grocery shop. There’s this one really nasty cashier who always hits on me when I go in there and I try being nice to her. I’ve told her I’m not interested, but still she persists. At times I’ve considered shopping somewhere else, but this is closer, ya know. Do this for me and I will reward you later.” Chance quipped, suggestively. “Do tell.” “If I told you, it wouldn’t be a reward,” he replied, smiling, “but I know you will enjoy it.” “I’m sure I will and I can’t wait.” He chuckled. “So, tell me, which way to work?” “Head into Green Valley.” “You live in Spring Valley and work in Green Valley?” he questioned with an odd look on his face. “That must take a lot of bus fare.” “No, I buy a bus pass every month.” “I knew I’d found myself a smart lady,” he chuckled. She directed him to her workplace and thanked him with a steamy kiss when he pulled into a parking spot now the door. “What do you do here?” “We develop computer software,” she replied. “I mostly do programming.” Chance nodded, “Big bucks, huh?” “It can be, but you have to stay on top of new technology. I’m tops in my field and get paid fairly well.” Kaia smiled. “I’d better let you go, honey. It’s about ten ’til 8,” he said. “I’ll pick you up later. 4:30 sharp?” “Correct. I’d better get in there.” Kaia replied, as she opened her door. She leaned back to kiss Chance before she flitted out of the car and into the building. She gave one last wave before she disappeared out of sight. Making her way to her office, she hung up her coat and stashed her purse in a locked file cabinet drawer. “Hey, Kaia,” a fellow employee poked his head inside her door. “Hello, Tyler,” she said with a sigh, wondering what he could possibly want now. “How was your holiday?” “Great!” “You look beautiful today.” Tyler quipped as he licked his lips, mentally undressing her. “Thanks, Tyler.” “Say, would you like to go out to dinner with me after work?” he asked for the hundredth time in the past three months, not even bothering to beat around the bush as he had before. Kaia stared at him as if he’d sprouted two heads and turned green all over. Not again, she fumed inwardly. “I don’t think so, Tyler.” “Why not? What’s your excuse this time? Why can’t you just give me a chance?” “I’m sorry, Tyler. I have a boyfriend,” she said. Tyler scoffed, “Good one, Kaia. Since when? Just the other day you were complaining you didn’t. What gives? Is that another excuse? I can’t see why you won’t go out with me?” “I met a guy on New Year’s Eve. He’s picking me up after work. He drove me here this morning.” “Oh, he drives a sports car, huh? Is that what it takes? I have a Corvette. That’s better than that car you came to work in.” Tyler sneered. “Tyler, I think you’re nice and all, but I’m not interested. I’ve been telling you that from the beginning. I like Chance.” “If things don’t work out, will you consider me then?” Tyler asked, the desperation thick in his voice, heavy and strained. “I don’t think so.” Kaia nodded and gave him a sympathetic look. “What can I say then? It was worth a try.” Tyler pouted then started to walk away. “You try too hard, Tyler. If you’d just given me some space instead of bombarding me from the get-go, you might’ve stood a chance,” Kaia replied as nicely as she could. Tyler lowered his face, sulking even more. “Tyler?” Kaia called out. “Yes?” He whirled around, hoping she’d changed her mind. “How much have you gotten done on your project?” “About half.” “Only half? You should be done, Tyler. I suggest you hop to it. That has to be finished A.S.A.P!!” “Yes, ma’am.” As noon came around, a deliveryman walked into the office with a dozen red long stemmed roses. “I have a delivery for Kaia O’Neill,” he said to the secretary as he read his clipboard. “I need someone to sign for them.” Kaia walked over to him. “I’m Kaia O’Neill,” she replied as she accepted the computerized clipboard from the deliveryman and scrawled her name on the screen. She then handed him a tip. “Thank you.” “Thank you,” he repeated, nodded at her and the secretary and took his leave. “Those are gorgeous, Kaia. Who are they from?” Lenore beamed. Kaia grabbed the card and opened it. With a giddy smile, she read what was written on it. Kaia, These roses pale in comparison to you. My heart overflows with love. I can’t wait until later, Love Always, Chance. Kaia read the card aloud to Lenore. “He is so sweet. I can’t wait to see him later,” she squealed. “You are so lucky, girl. I wish my husband were more like that. He hardly ever sends me roses.” Lenore stated. “So, why are you keeping him a secret?” Kaia shrugged, “I just met him recently.” “Oh, okay. You’ll have to bring him by soon.” Lenore smiled. “He’s picking me up.” “I’d like to meet him.” “You will. Oh, I need you to fax these to Brenton Alexander ASAP. The number’s on the sheet. And I need that market research report on that educational software package.” Kaia said, “Man, today has been one hell of a day. Oh, and Chen Lu needs the figures from Brenton when they’re faxed back.” “I’m right on it!” Lenore nodded as she set aside her current task to fax the letters Kaia had given her, who had picked up her roses and carried them back to her office. She set them on the filing cabinet, stepping back momentarily to admire them as she sighed dreamily and thought of Chance before she went back to work, stopping briefly to eat a light lunch. The rest of the day passed quickly. Shortly after 4 as she slaved over a complicated program, busily debugging Tyler’s sloppy work, Tyler poked his head into her office. “Nice roses! I heard you got them.” “What now, Tyler?” Kaia growled. “This is the biggest mess I have ever seen. It’ll take me forever to correct your syntax errors. You’re damn lucky Marisol hasn’t seen this.” “Sorry, Kaia. You said you wanted it done.” “I wanted it done right. Now what do you want? Can’t you see I’m busy?” “Yes, I see that, but there’s someone here to see you.” “Who?” Kaia bit out, “And why didn’t Lenore just call me about it?” “Lenore is on a smoke break. It’s some hippy looking dude. Long hair.” “That’s Chance.” “Okay, so that’s the competition!” Tyler quipped as he nodded his head. “You have strange tastes in men. I’d imagined that you would’ve liked the clean cut kind.” “Next time, darling.” Kaia replied. “I’m gonna shut down for today. I’ll fix the rest of this mess tomorrow. Let’s go!” “Good.” Kaia saved the program she’d been working on and shut down her computer. Unlocking her filing cabinet door, she pulled out her purse and shut it back up, relocking it. Then she grabbed her coat. After shutting her office door, she walked out with Chance. On their way past Lenore’s desk, she gave her and Tyler a wave. Then flitted out the door where Chance opened the car door for her and helped her in. “So, where shall we eat?” he asked as he slid in beside her and started the engine. “There’s a good Chinese restaurant nearby. Let’s see, there is an Italian place and a steakhouse,” she offered. “Which one would you like to eat at?” he asked. ” They all sound fine to me.” “How about the steakhouse? It’s just right over there.” Kaia suggested as she pointed it out to him. “Great.” Chance replied as he pulled into the lot. “Have you ever been here before?” “Of course, I have. It’s good food.” Kaia said as he parked the car. “Look at you. You’re all dressed up and I’m not. What a pair we make,” he chuckled looking down at the clothes he’d worn all day. “I should’ve changed.” “It’s okay. You look fine.” Kaia drawled. Chance laughed as he got out of the car. Hand in hand they walked into the restaurant and waited to be seated. “So, what’d you do today?” Kaia asked with a gleaming smile. “Well, I worked out, shot some hoops with Christian, got a keys for you for the car and apartment. I have to put you on my lease for some dumb reason. Let’s see, I slept awhile and Alex stopped by so I hung out with him. I also cleaned the apartment.” Chance replied. “Is here anything I can do for you?” Chance lifted an eyebrow and chuckled, throwing her a hungry look that dripped pure passion. “I mean at the apartment?” she clarified as she gave him a teasing smack on the arm. “No, just the grocery shopping. Make yourself comfortable,” he replied. “Okay,” she nodded. “I do need to get a few things from my house and make a few calls, but other than that, I’m not doing anything.” “What about that bubble bath?” Chance teased with a cock of his eyebrow. “That, too.” A pretty waitress greeted them as she checked out Chance. “Two?” she asked. “Yes.” “Smoking or non.” “Non-smoking.” Chance replied tersely, aware of her eyes upon him and blatant stare. “This way,” she said as she seated them at a booth and handed them their menus. “My name is Jennifer and I’ll be your server today. What would you like to drink?” |
