A Chance To Love Ch. 21

The lonely night Kaia spent in Madaysa’s spare room became a revelation to her. Although Madaysa did her best to comfort her, Kaia realized she had only herself to depend on. Fierce determination rescued her floundering pride. She reminded herself that she was a survivor and that this was just one more stumbling block to overcome. She would go on, life would go on, and she vowed to triumph over this latest trial.

As she carefully considered what she would do about a place to live, she thought of the tidy inheritance she’d been given after her beloved grandmother passed away and how she’d used very little of it. An image of the house she was so fond of came to mind. That house would be hers. She knew with her inheritance and a home loan from her bank, she would be able to purchase the house…a home all of her own.

Kaia set the ball rolling the next day when she visited the realtor and the bank. The house was vacant and ready to move into. All she had to do was wait for closing. The beautiful two story stucco exterior house with an orange tiled roof and a quaint wrought iron gate and courtyard would soon be hers.

Madaysa’s friendship proved to be extremely valuable, as well as Pam’s, to Kaia. While waiting for her house, Kaia continued to stay in Madaysa’s spare room. She helped her move out of Chance’s apartment and comforted he when Kaia was down. Above all, Madaysa believed in Kaia’s innocence and accepted the truth.

On the night before Pam and Kyle’s honeymoon in Las Vegas ended, they all went out, going to The Jungle Room, much to Kaia’s dismay. She didn’t want to see Chance so soon, but agreed to go anyway. Madaysa graciously introduced Kaia to her brother, Carson. Kaia was immediately enamored by his dark good looks and fantastic body. She found his long black hair, warm sensuous cocoa brown eyes, moustache and goatee to be extremely sexy. Yet deep down Kaia knew he couldn’t hold a candle to Chance.

The three couples, Matt and Madaysa, Pam and Kyle and Kaia and Carson, arrived at the club early that Friday night, just slightly before the bar began to hop with action. Although reluctantly, Kaia dressed to the nines, wearing a shimmering, sequined black slip dress with knee high leather boots. She had taken extra special care with her hair and makeup, wanting to look good for Carson. But Kaia knew there was another reason why she wanted to look so good. She wanted to remind Chance what he had and what he was missing out on.

Anticipation gripped Kaia’s senses as she walked in on Carson’s arm. She scanned the large room, her eyes locking in on Chance as he stood behind the bar, talking to Alex. Kaia sucked in a deep breath as her heart pounded in her ears. She groaned inwardly as longing raced deep through her being. How good he looked standing there?

She sighed and fought back the urge to run to him, fought back the urge to beg him for his love. Her heart broke anew as he watched him laugh. Did he know she was even there, her soul cried. Could he feel her in the room? The world seemed to come to a screeching halt around her as she imagined him looking up at her and smiling that gorgeous come hither smile he had bestowed upon her many, many times. She pulled away from Carson and stepped towards the bar, her sights firmly set on Chance. Chance, her mind called, Chance!

A drunken man ran into her and brought her out of her reverie. She shook her head and noticed the look of concern on Carson’s face. She gave him a wan smile and allowed him to lead her off to a booth near one of the club’s pool tables. Soon, a game of pool between the teams of Pam and Kyle and Matt and Madaysa began.

“Hey Kaia,” Madaysa called after the first game had been won by Pam and Kyle. “What’ll it be?”

“Huh?” she questioned.

“What do you want to drink?” Madaysa asked, the losers having to buy the round of drinks.

Kaia laughed, shutting out the pain as she watched Chance. ” I’ll have an Amaretto Sour.”

“That’s an awesome drink!” Carson spoke up. “The lady has good taste.”

“Most of the time.” Pam quipped, wryly.

“Any volunteers to go with me to get drinks?” Madaysa asked, smiling.

“You know I will, babe.” Matt spoke up, “No offense, Kaia, but you should stay here.”

“None taken, Matt. I don’t want to be near that low life jerk,” she replied, as tears burned her eyes. How she longed to be able to go to him, to sit at the bar and watch him work like she had done many times in the past? She could never get enough of him, could never get enough of looking at him. It hurt her still that he was no longer in her life and that she no longer had his love.

Matt nodded his head, “I never thought I’d agree with one of his ex’s and not him. I’ve known him for a long time, but this time he was wrong. One day he will regret what he did to you and it may be too late.”

“It is too late. I could never forgive him.” Kaia said. “We’ve been over this whole deal before. You know how I feel about it all and you have no idea how much I value your friendship and Madaysa’s. Without you two, I don’t know what I would have done.”

“We know, girl.” Madaysa chimed. “I’ll always be here for you. You have become my best friend.” Turning to Carson, she added, “Ya coming, bro?”

“Of course, I’ll be more than happy to get Kaia’s drink.”

Matt, Madaysa and Carson ventured up to the bar while Kyle and Pam stayed with Kaia.

“Hey Matt, what’s up, bro?” Alex asked as he stepped over to them.

“We are partyin’, dude. Having a great time might I add. ‘Daysa and I just got our asses kicked in pool, though.” Matt guffawed.

Chance came over, sneering. “Why in the hell did you two bring that bitch here?”

“Don’t call Kaia a bitch!” Madaysa spoke first, angered.

“Ah, I see how it is. Letting your hooch talk for ya. You must be whipped. Hey Alex, Matt is PW.” Chance taunted.

Matt glared at him, menacingly. “First off, don’t let your big fat mouth override skinny little ass. We may be best friends, but if you ever insult my woman again, you had best be ready for a fight. Secondly, Kaia is not a bitch.”

“Oh really? Did you fuck her, too?” Chance shot back.

“Hell no!” Matt growled, “I know how to be faithful to my woman which is something you obviously forgot how to do. And if I had, it wouldn’t be any of your business.”

Chance glared at Matt and muttered a curse, ready to leap over the bar and throttle his long-time friend where he stood.

Carson spoke up, “I do believe at some point that pleasure will be all mine.”

“Who the hell are you?”

“My name is Carson.”

“He’s my brother.” Madaysa spoke up.

“I don’t care who the hell you are.” Chance retorted.

“I’m Kaia’s date so if you have a problem, we can step outside and solve it.” Carson tersely replied as he contemptuously glared at Chance, scathingly staring him down.

Chance guffawed, “Sucks to be you, dude. That two bit slut isn’t worth fighting over, but one piece of advice, dude, be careful, she may use you for your car.”

Carson reflexively punched Chance in the mouth, bloodying his lip and knocking him backwards. “Actually pal, she’s too good for you. What she ever saw in you is beyond me?”

Turning around, he motioned for Kaia to join him. She did so reluctantly. “What, Carson?” she asked without venturing a glance at Chance. She didn’t dare look at him for she knew she would’ve broken down in tears. Her heart ached as she struggled not to show it. And she wondered if Chance was just as affected.

He was.

Seeing her looking as beautiful as ever gnawed at his heart and hardened it at the same time. He hated to imagine her with another man and yet here she was right in front of him with some one else. He longed to break down and beg her to forgive him, beg her to take him back. He longed to forget all the bad and remember only the good they had shared together. He longed for her to look at him and smile…smile that beautiful smile of hers that left him weak and wanting her like he had never wanted another woman. He groaned inwardly as he imagined her with Carson in such an intimate way. It was too much to take. He let out a growl, ready to lash out.

“Honey, tell your loser ex you don’t need to use me for my car.” Carson taunted.

Kaia felt her pulse start to race as she leveled her gaze on Chance, whose lip had begun to swell and sneered, “No, I have my own car. Anyway, you offered me use of that car. I never asked to use it. I never thought you could be so spiteful. Let it go. I did.”

Chance snorted, “I bet you did. Just like the whore you really are to be able to move on not even a week after I threw your ass out. And you expect me to believe your tears and to believe you really loved me.”

“Carson is just a friend. I haven’t slept with him and I don’t plan on it any time soon. I did love you. I do love you, but you moved on first. Why should I continue to cry over spilled milk? It’s done and over with…in the past. You have your twin bimbos. What’s it any business of yours what I do?”

“None at all. I don’t give a damn.”

“Surely you must, darling, or you wouldn’t be bothered by the fact that I’m in here with someone else.”

“Whatever, bitch, and I’m not your darling. Don’t call me darling!”

“Darling!” Kaia quipped, leveling a venomous glare at him.

“She’s not a bitch!” Carson and Madaysa growled at once.

“Whatever!” Chance retorted as he walked away, needing to get away from her magnetic pull. She had met him insult for insult without weakening and crying as he thought she would. She gave as good as she got. She always had. He shook his head, admiring her spunk anew. He glanced at her and sighed, wondering where he had gone wrong, where had things gone wrong for them. Was she not affected by the nearness? His heart pounded heavily. Damn, how he wanted her back, but he couldn’t admit he was wrong. He would not swallow his pride. He would not.

Matt shook his head, somehow sensing Chance’s inner turmoil. “Man, what is his problem?” he asked Alex.

Alex scoffed. “Her!”

“Oh hell no, she didn’t start this. He did. I can’t believe he’s being such an ass about it?” Matt defended.

“Why are you defending her?” Alex accused. “Are you fucking her as well?”

“Hell no, I ain’t! Maybe I realize she’s been telling the truth all along and hasn’t done a damn thing wrong. And Chance is acting like a stupid dumbfuck jackass.”

Kaia sighed aloud, tired of all the fighting. “This was a mistake for me to come here. I’m grateful to have your friendship, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of the life long friendship you share with Alex and Chance. I don’t wanna come between that,” she replied as she looked at Matt then at Chance longingly. “I’ll just leave.”

“No, you won’t!” Madaysa spoke up. “You have every right to be here.”

“No, I don’t.” Kaia countered. “Carson, take me home or if you want to stay, I’ll call a cab.”

“I’ll take you home if that’s what you want.”

“It’s for the best.” Kaia replied, as she dared one last glance at Chance, hoping he’d ask her to stay. Please, she silently begged, casting a pleading look in his direction.

“Get that hooch out of here!” Chance came back, delivering a brutal blow to her hopes. “I see you are finally getting smart, Kaia. You figured out you weren’t welcome here ever.”

She glared at him, sending a cold, calculated look that mirrored hate and regret. Chance sighed, exhaling deeply. A part of him deep inside hated to see that look from her. Damn, how he wished he could call her back.

No, you don’t wish that, another voice echoed.

Yes, you do, his heart called, reminding him how he still wanted her.

His head and heart warring over the maelstrom of emotions seeing her had stirred up. He shook his head and turned away so he wouldn’t have to see her walk away from him.

Carson walked her out, his anger building as he vowed to make Chance pay for how he’d treated one as sweet as Kaia, vowed to make him pay for the hurt he’d caused her.

Kaia spoke up as they stepped outside. “Carson, I’ll get a cab home, ok? I’m sorry, but I’d rather be alone right now.”

“You shouldn’t be.”

“I need to be alone right now. I’m okay. Really I am. You are one hell of a gorgeous man, but I’m not ready to move on. Can we just be friends for now?”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, completely.”

“At least let me drive you home. As your friend, I’d like to be there in your time of need in case you need someone to talk to or a shoulder to cry on. See, I have wide shoulders.”

“No, I’ll get a cab. There’s one right here.”

“It goes against my better judgment, but if you insist.”

“I do.”

“Be safe, sweet Kaia.”

“Thank you for being so understanding.” Kaia replied as she walked toward the cab.

“I’ll call you soon.” Carson promised as he watched her slip into the back seat of the yellow Desert Cab. She waved from the window as it drove away.

“I can’t believe you could be so cruel? I never would have believed it if I hadn’t seen it with my own two eyes. How can you treat her like that? How do you sleep at night knowing how badly you have ostracized her when she’s done nothing wrong? I just hope someone hurts you the way you have her!?!” Madaysa railed at Chance.

“Kaia already did!” Chance rebuked.

“Oh no she didn’t!”

“Whatever! Matt, if you have any sense left, you’ll get her out of my face!” Chance warned.

Carson returned, ordering a drink.

“Where’s Kaia?” Madaysa demanded, looking around for her.

“She took a cab home. She refused to let me drive her. Said she needed time alone,” he replied.

“And you let her?” Madaysa shrieked, her voice as shrill as fingernails scraping a blackboard.

“Good riddance!” Chance muttered from nearby eliciting dark scowls from the three friends.

“She insisted so I let her. I respect her need for privacy.”

“Carson, you should’ve followed her,” his sister whined.

“Look, she just wants to be friends and I respect her wishes. She says she’s not ready to move on. I don’t blame her for feeling that way. I understand so I let her go.” Carson reasoned. “It’s okay. She needed to be alone and I respect that.”

“How touching.” Chance growled sarcastically. ” My ex bitch has morals…too bad she forgot them when she screwed around on me.”

“No, you were the one who forgot about having morals. You screwed around on her. I can’t believe you’d pick up with two nasty sluts like the twins are. They were in here on your night off Wednesday with two other guys.” Matt shot back, “I asked Spice where you were and she said you were waiting at home like a good boy for them to come over. It was closing time before they left and they didn’t leave alone.”

“So what? I know that! I wasn’t home either, though. I went over to Chynna’s.” Chance shrugged. “We had dinner. Man, I’d forgotten how good of a lay she was.”

“I hate to say it, but you’ve changed, bud and not for the best.” Matt sneered as he pushed away from the bar, walking away with Madaysa and Carson following him.

Chance snorted, “Did you hear that? I’ve changed!?!? No, I’m just tired of being screwed over by bimbos like Kaia.”

“Is Chynna coming over tonight?” Alex asked, looking from the backs of the departing Matt and Madaysa to Chance.

“Yes, she told me she’d stop in after she got off work. Pity that she couldn’t have been here now for Kaia to see.” Chance replied with a scowl.

“So, like, are you two gonna get back together?”

“I dunno bro. It’s really too soon to say yes or no.”

Alex nodded, “Hey, Shalee has a good friend she wants you to meet.”

“Sure, I’ll meet her.” Chance said, as he smiled at a pretty redhead who approached the bar.

“I can’t believe him!” Madaysa fumed. “I know I haven’t known him very long, but I never thought he would treat a woman that he claimed to be so in love with like he has Kaia. It’s so wrong!”

“I know, doll. He’s not being himself.” Matt replied, shaking his head. “Hey, let’s forget about him and go dance. Kaia is a big girl who can take care of herself. She did the best thing by leaving. I hate to say that, but if she’d stayed, things could’ve been worse.”

“Okay, but I still don’t like it.” Madaysa scowled before Matt kissed her and took her mind off the whole mess.

As the days passed slowly, Kaia began to move on. She was finally able to move into her house, which she put all of her energy into furnishing, indulging herself in her dream. She had her life almost where she wanted it to be, but it lacked something. It lacked Chance. She knew they would’ve been happy here in this home, knew they could’ve spent the rest of their lives here. Her heart ached anew at the loss of his love, of that dream, but she knew she would find a way to go on.

Days turned weeks and weeks into months. Her pain lessened until she made one astonishing discovery. Her cycle had always been irregular, but this couldn’t be true. She couldn’t possibly be pregnant after what Levi had done to her.

A small glimmer of hope arose within her. She was carrying Chance’s child. Her heart swelled with joy. She may not have his love, but she would have the love of his child, their child. Forever, they would be bonded.

A few more months went by and her pregnancy progressed normally. Although she began to feel like a whale again, the thought of their child growing beneath her heart made it all worth while. It was then that Kaia gathered the courage to visit Chance. She wrote him a long letter and enclosed the tape where Nancy had confessed to setting her up. Grabbing her extra key she’d kept to his apartment, she headed out to her new Lexus SC 430 that bought after winning a $70,000 jackpot on $500 slots at The Venetian Hotel and Casino. Since finding out about her pregnancy, she’d secretly been keeping tabs on Chance and knew he hadn’t moved. She smirked to herself as she thought of the night not too long ago that she had put on a wig and glasses and went to The Jungle Room alone. How it filled her with joy and sorrow to watch him, but not be able to be near him. If only, she sighed, if only. His days off had changed back to Tuesday and Wednesday so she expected him to be home. If not, she would let herself in and leave the letter for him.

Memories assailed her, haunted her, as she drove into the lot of the complex she’d once called home. Pulling into a visitor’s parking spot, she glanced around and took note that only the gorgeous black Camaro sat amongst the row of vehicles lined up beneath the carport. It seemed he wasn’t home.

With mixed emotions, she climbed the stairs to the second floor and headed for Apartment 231 for the first time in six months. The apartment was pitch black as she entered it and flipped on the light near the door. She glanced around, noting how it hadn’t changed, only the fact that she didn’t live there anymore.

She held back the tears she nearly shed as her eyes fixed on the bed. How the memories tortured her? She fought the urge to break down, but she steeled herself against it. She wouldn’t cry, refused to cry. Not now. She placed a hand on her swollen belly and let out a deep sigh. Not now. Perhaps it was best Chance wasn’t here.

Laying the letter on the bar, she took leave of his apartment, vowing never to step inside it again. After she relocked the door, she slipped the key underneath it and proceeded back to her Lexus.

Her heart leapt into her throat as she saw him when she reached her car. He stood beside his truck, glaring at her. She opened her door, desperately trying to hide her burgeoning stomach.

He stormed over to her, scowling. He knows, her mind screamed. He saw me!

“What brings you here?” Chance asked, tersely.

“I…uh…I found something that I wanted to return to you. I had a spare key to the apartment so since you weren’t here, I let myself in and left it on the bar. I locked the door and slipped beneath it,” she stammered as her heart pounded in her ears.
