| A Chance To Love Ch. 22 | |||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Three months after Kaia’s visit to Chance, she gave birth to a baby girl she named Madison Faith, who had thick light blond hair and blue eyes. Pure joy and utter bliss surged through her as she held her baby for the first time. Tears of happiness poured down Kaia’s face as she held her miracle child closely to her breast. If only…If only Chance could see the beautiful daughter their love had created, the beautiful daughter who looked so much like him. Madison let out a healthy squall, giving her tiny lungs a workout and alerting Kaia to her need. “Ah, is mama’s little angel hungry?” Kaia cooed as she picked her up and patted her tiny bottom. Madison calmed her crying as Kaia loosed her gown and bared her breast to her seeking mouth. The fair haired fine boned child latched on greedily and began to suckle. A surge of hope bubbled through Kaia…hope of a new future with Madison’s father. “Ah, little one, you are just as greedy as your papa. Just in different ways.” She took pleasure in nursing her child, holding her small body close, snuggling her, caressing her baby soft head and face. “My sweet girl, we will be just fine together. If only your papa could see you now.” Kaia whispered, as a knock came at the door, catching Kaia off guard. “Come in,” she called out, figuring it was her parents or a nurse. “Hey girl!” Madaysa chimed as she, Matt, Morgan, Wade and Carson entered the room. Kaia quickly grabbed a receiving blanket to shield herself. “Hey, great to see ya,” she smiled. “I can’t wait to hold that baby! Ya just have to tell me all about your labor and everything!” Madaysa bubbled as she took a seat on Matt’s lap who’d sat down on one of the chairs. “I figured Morgan would’ve filled you in.” Kaia replied, shooting her an odd look. “Oh no, we just met them in the hallway.” Madaysa shook her head. “So tell us already!” Carson chuckled. “Okay, well, mom went into the delivery room with me. I had an easy delivery…lasted three hours. I dilated quickly.” “WOW! Talk about easy!” Madaysa exclaimed. “What did you name the baby? And is it a boy or girl?” “Girl. Her name is Madison Faith O’ Neill. She weighed 6lbs, 3oz and is 21 inches long. She has a lot of hair and she looks like her papa.” “Have you called Chance yet? Does he know?” Matt asked. “No and I’m not going to. He won’t know unless you tell him. He knows I’m pregnant. If it were important to him, he’d get a hold of me!” Kaia replied, as she fought back her tears. “He has asked me many times and I’ve told him to talk to you if he wanted to know, but he said he didn’t know how to get a hold of you.” Matt added. “I told him to call your work.” “Must not be too important to him because he never called my work.” Kaia shrugged. “Where are your mom and dad?” Wade asked, noticing how the mention of Chance upset her. “At my house, resting. They drove down. Mom said she would be back later. She wants to hold her grandbaby more.” “Hey! I wanna hold that baby, too. Give it up already!” Madaysa quipped. “As soon as she’s done eating. She has a healthy appetite.” Kaia replied, with a chuckle and a sparkle in her eye. Carson came over and sat on the edge of bed beside her. “Hey mama, how do you feel?” he teased as he kissed her forehead. “Pretty good actually. A little sore, though.” “You look good.” “Get out of here! I’m a mess!” Kaia quipped. “You’re beautiful, doll. It’s natural beauty!” Kaia shook her head, laughing as she tried to quell the tide of emotions flooding her. She recalled the many times Chance had said the same thing to her. Why? Why did it still hurt to think of him? “Whatever!” “Isn’t she?” “Yes!” Wade replied. “You are and you know it, girl!” Morgan added, “Right?” “Yes, very!” Madaysa agreed. ” And any man or anyone who can’t see that is blind.” “Exactly!” Carson replied as he stroked her hair. “Okay, I’m blind then!” Kaia quipped with a big smile. Matt’s cell phone rang at that moment. “Who could that be?” he muttered aloud as he checked it. He chuckled, “Guess who?” “Who?” Madaysa asked as she cocked an eyebrow. “Chance. Mind if I answer it in here, Kaia? Or would you rather I step out into the hall?” Matt answered as he looked at Kaia. “It’s okay. Go ahead and answer it here.” “Hello?” he said as he answered his phone. “What up, bud?” Matt asked. “I wanted to know if you and ‘Daysa were still coming over tonight? Are we still on?” Chance inquired. “Uhhh…we’re at University Medical Center right now.” “Is everything okay? Is anyone hurt?” he questioned. “No, it’s all cool. ‘Daysa is visiting a friend.” Chance exhaled, “Whew! Had me scared for a minute!” “We’ll be over later!” “Okay. So who’s her friend?” “Just a friend. No one that concerns you.” Kaia switched breasts and Madison took that opportunity to let out an unhappy wail. She shushed her as she guided the tiny baby’s mouth to the exposed nipple. “What was that? A baby? Oh, is Madaysa’s friend in the maternity ward?” “Uh yeah.” Matt replied. “Oh. Say has Kaia had her baby yet?” Chance asked, a gut feeling telling him that was really who they were visiting. “I don’t know, bud. I haven’t seen her and Madaysa hasn’t said anything to me about it. I have told you that you should call her work.” “I did and I was told she was on maternity leave. Do me a favor, please. Will you tell me when she does? I would like to know if it’s mine.” “Sure, bud. Look, we’ll see you later.” Matt replied, swerving the subject. “Later.” Matt flipped the phone closed, shaking his head. “He asked about you, Kaia, but as you heard I didn’t tell him. He wants to know, though and he did call your work. I don’t like lying to him so you need to let him know.” “Thank you for covering for me, Matt. I will tell him, but not right now. I’m not ready to face him, not after all the things he said to me, all the cruel names he called me and all he did. Just how many women did he have?” “Good question, but I really don’t know for sure. I won’t lie to you, Kaia. He went off the deep end for a while. Let’s see, there were the twins, Chynna, some hooch named Shanda, and that one blond…uh…Candace.” “You forgot that Asian wench. You know, the one we all called Hoochie Min.” “Six women!?” Kaia exclaimed, emphatically. “Those are just the ones we met!” Matt said. “There could’ve been others. I don’t know for sure.” “And he called me a slut!” Kaia retorted, ” I don’t want him anywhere near me or Madison. I swear I will never forgive him!” “That’s your decision, Kaia, but choose it carefully. You have to think of your daughter, not yourself and how he hurt you. Chance would be a good father if you allow him to be!” “NO!!” Kaia’s voice raised an octave as her aqua eyes shot daggers at Matt. Madison hiccupped and let out a bellow before resuming nursing. ” Whose side are you on anyway?” “I’m merely stating a fact, Kaia, which has nothing to do with picking sides.” “Whatever. He’s not coming near her!” Tension filled the air. Matt shook his head, “It’s your decision, but you have to think of Madison, too. That’s all I’m saying.” “I will, Matt, but right now is not a good time.” “I understand that.” “Okay, let’s drop it.” Kaia retorted. “I guess I’ll have to tell everyone at work you had Madison,” Morgan, who now worked for SofGraphix, spoke up. “Yes, please. It’ll be odd taking six weeks off but I’ll enjoy the time I’ll get to spend with my little darling baby girl.” Soon Madison finished nursing and Kaia burped her. “Alright, who’s first to hold my sweet little angel?” “Me, Me, Me!!!” Madaysa jumped up and gladly accepted the child, cradling her in her arms, “Oh, she is so beautiful. So precious. You are so lucky. Ah, Matt, look at her. Isn’t she just so precious?” “Yes, she is,” he agreed. “When are we going to have one?” Madaysa whined. “Whenever you get your ass off that damn pill, woman,” he chuckled in return. “If I get fat, I’ll lose my job.” Madaysa whined again. “You won’t be fat, honey. You’ll be pregnant.” Matt shook his head as he smiled at her. “You’ll be carrying our child and I think you will be a beautiful mother. So quit worrying.” “Do you?” “Yes, my love, I do.” Matt smiled. “Kaia, you have been truly blessed with this beautiful child. Too bad her father is such a rotter!” “You can do better.” Carson spoke up. “Carson, we’ve had this conversation before and you know how I feel. I need time. You know I value your friendship and how much you’ve been there for me.” “I know, love, and I always will be,” he smiled. For the remainder of their visit they passed Madison around, each taking their turn holding the precious baby girl. As they left, each hugged Kaia, promising to visit again. It was good to see her friends, but if only see could see Chance. If only he could see Madison. ~*~ Convinced it was Kaia at UMC instead of someone he didn’t know, Chance called the hospital and asked for information. “University Medical Center. How may I direct your call?” an operator asked. “I need patient information. Could you tell me what room Kaia O’Neill is in?” Chance asked. “Yes sir, she is in room M-310. Would you like me to transfer the call?” she replied. “No, that won’t be necessary. Can you tell me what the visiting hours are for that unit?” he asked. “10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.” “Thank you,” Chance replied with a sigh. He set his phone down, his heart heavy. Matt had lied to him. He and Madaysa were visiting Kaia and had lied to him. How could he? Grabbing his keys, he headed for the door and to his truck, dead set on seeing Kaia and the child he surely felt had to be his. He drove like a man possessed, reaching the hospital in ten minutes. He parked his truck in the parking garage and headed for the building that housed the maternity unit. As he reached the floor Kaia was on, he walked through the sliding glass doors and peeked in the nursery window. His eyes glanced over the cribs as he searched for one labeled ‘O’Neill.’ Disappointed, he did not see one. The child must be in the room, he surmised. He headed toward the rooms, walking down the hallway until he came to room M-310. He sucked in a deep breath as he placed his hand on the closed door knob. Should he knock, he wondered. He shook his head and slowly twisted the knob, pushing the handle. He surveyed the room, his heart pounding in his ears. He viewed the sleeping baby swaddled in a blanket laying in its crib, but where was Kaia? He looked around and noticed the bathroom door stood closed. Ah, she was in the bathroom. He knelt down in front of the sleeping baby and watched in awe. As he reached out to it, entranced by the child, he did not hear Kaia step out of the bathroom. Her eyes grew wide when she saw him, her throat suddenly dry, her heart slamming in her chest. “Get out!” Kaia growled as she finally recovered her shaky voice. The harsh brittle command startled him and he pulled his hand back as if he had been burned. “Kaia!” “You heard me. Out! Now!” Kaia retorted as she walked over and scooped up Madison. “Please, Kaia! Let me see the child. I have to know if it’s mine.” “Rest assured, your bank account is safe, if that’s what you are worried about. Now get out!” “My bank account is the least of my worries, Kaia. If that child is mine, I want to be there for it. I want to be a father to it.” “She’s not an it!” Kaia retorted, “And since when do you want a child? If my memory serves me right, you swore up and down to not wanting to be a father.” “A daughter? Wow!” Chance mused. “Whoever said she was yours?” “You did. You said yourself you hadn’t been with Carson or Tyler so unless there was a guy you never told anyone about that only leaves me! Which makes me wonder why you said you couldn’t have any?” Chance charged. “I was told I wouldn’t be able to become pregnant because of my damaged ovaries. I only have one left. The other was removed after Levi nearly killed me. This child is a miracle and one you will never see.” “We’ll see about that! I can drag you to court and get partial custody.” “No!!” “Yes, I can and you well know I have the money!” “Fine, I’ll see you in court then!” Kaia retorted, calling his bluff. “So you’re admitting she’s mine then.” Chance inquired, cocking an eyebrow. “No, she belongs to Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, aliens!” Kaia shouted, hoping to make enough noise in order to bring a nurse to the room. “Can you at least tell me her name?” “No!” “Kaia, be reasonable!” “Why in the hell should I? You weren’t!” she yelled back. “Tone your voice down, Kaia. And yes, I know I wasn’t. I’m sorry for it, too,” he replied, as he rested his hands on his hips and gave her a pleading look. “Sorry isn’t good enough, Chance. You hurt me in ways you could not even begin to imagine and I will never forgive you for it. Furthermore, I will not allow my daughter to be a pawn in your twisted game. You need to walk away! Go now!” Kaia rebuked, fighting the urge to give in to him and let him be a part of their lives. She longed to feel his arms around her, longed for his presence in her life. She had missed him. “Fine, I’ll go for now, but I’ll be back. I will take you to court if I have to. I will see my daughter!” “She’s my daughter, Chance. Mine! You were simply her sperm donor.” Kaia cruelly shot back. A hurt look marred his face. “Fine. I came here in hopes to make peace with you. In hopes we could put the past to rest and be a family. I can’t believe I actually thought we could work things out because of the love we shared, because of the love that created her, but I guess I was wrong.” “You are. I don’t want you back. I will never forgive you. I could never trust you. It’s way too late. You have known of my pregnancy for three months since I stopped by your apartment. It’s not like this is new to you.” Kaia coldly murmured as Madison began to whimper. “Please leave. I must feed her.” “Fine, but you haven’t seen the last of me.” Chance promised. “What a pity!” Sarcasm dripped from her venomous tone. “Do us both a favor, don’t come back!” He shot her an angered look and stormed out, recalling the words he had said to her the last time he had saw her. Only on that occasion, he had spoken them. Kaia sat down in one of the chairs and loosed her gown, allowing her baby to nurse. She inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly to return her rapidly racing heart back to normal. Her nerves calmed as she focused on her suckling babe. Seeing Chance in her room had taken her by surprise. How had he known? Did Matt tell him after all? Oh Chance, she sighed, why? Why after all this time? Chance reached the elevator, cursing under his breath. He had expected Kaia to be angry with him. He had expected her to not want him around. Yet he thought she would let him see his child. Sperm donor, he shook his head. If she only knew how that insult had hurt. He scoffed, knowing he had deserved it for all the insults he had flung at her. As the elevator doors opened, he looked into it then glanced the way he had just come. He sighed, ran his hand through his hair and let the doors close before him. Determined, he headed back to Kaia’s room. He stormed in, startling her as he slammed the door shut. She let out a squeak of surprise, staring at him. Her eyes grew wide as she stammered, searching for words. “I’m not leaving here until I see my daughter!” Chance charged heatedly, “So I think you need to hear me out.” “Get out! You gotta have kahuna’s the size of grapefruit’s to come back in here. I don’t want you here!” Kaia retorted as she recovered her voice. “I’m not leaving,” he shook his head as he drank in the sight of the babe suckling at her breast. “God, what a glorious sight that is. You look so beautiful with our daughter nursing.” He took a step toward her and knelt down before her, mesmerized. “Chance, leave, please!” Kaia pleaded. “Don’t make me go! I wanna see my little girl. Please, Kaia.” Chance begged. “Why now? Why do you come around nine months too late? You’ve known I was pregnant for three months and you could have come to me then. Like I said before, it’s not like this is new to you!” Kaia replied. “And furthermore, Chance, you tore my life apart. You hurt me. You crushed me, but I have survived. I’ve picked myself up and went on with my life. You wouldn’t listen to me. No, you couldn’t be bothered to see the truth. You did the very thing you accused me of. You swore you were different from any man I had ever known. You swore you wouldn’t hurt me, break my heart or anything like that. You expect me to forgive you after what you did, after all the names you called me. I have never been a whore, slut, bitch like you called me. To this day, nine months, there has not been another man in my bed. Yet you’ve been the one acting like a slut with all those women. All of that and you have the audacity to march in here and ask me to listen to you when you refused to listen to me…to the truth!” “I was wrong and I know it! I’ve known it for a while. I thought I’d give you time. I have missed you so much. I’m so sorry for everything I did. I don’t expect you to forgive me, but I’d like to see our daughter.” Chance replied. “How could you be so cruel to me? That’s what I want to know. How? As much as you professed to love me, how could you? How could you say some of the things you said? What did I do to you to deserve it?” Kaia tearfully asked, her resolve to be strong crumbling. Chance shook his head. “Good question. I wish I knew what possessed me. I wish I could give you an answer. I felt betrayed and it blinded me. I let some jealous vindictive bitch cloud my judgment and poison my heart against you. I should’ve known better, I should’ve believed you. And you were right. I’ve realized that a man is only a broken shell of his former self when he loses his heart. You’ve always had my heart, Kaia. I didn’t mean all the things I said. You have to believe me when I say you the best thing that ever happened to me.” “You have a funny way of showing it.” Kaia countered. “I know and I was wrong. I would do anything to get you back, my love, but I know that’s not possible because I know nothing I can say will convince you to give me another shot. I lost the best thing that ever happened to me because of my stupidity. Yes, I’ve had other women, but none of them compared to you. There will never be another woman in my life that means as much to me as you do. If I can’t have you back, I don’t want anyone else.” “Hindsight is always 20/20, ya know. You say now that none of those women compared to me yet I remember you telling me one time that you’d found better…that those nasty twins were better. Maybe you need to get your story straight.” “I said that because I was angry. People say things they don’t mean when they are angry. I’m sure you’ve done it.” Chance retorted. “Yes, but the issue here is not me. The issue is you did the very thing you accused me of because of one vindictive bitch’s lies and one man’s jealousy. You took your anger out on me. That wasn’t fair.” “I know it wasn’t. That morning when I woke up with them, I felt so low. I had never done that with any woman. Having a fling like that wasn’t my thing. I felt extremely guilty. I felt torn. I thought you had cheated on me. That thought hurt like hell and I lashed out against it. I did. I took all that guilt out on you. I should have known better. If I was thinking straight, I would’ve realized you were right when you reminded me of the time Syndi told you I was out with another woman, but I didn’t. I was wrong, Kaia. And I am paying for it by losing my heart, by losing the best damn thing that ever happened to me.” Chance exhaled deeply and stood up. He hung his head. “I’ll go now. Thank you for listening.” |
