A Chance To Love Ch. 23

Two days later, Chance was there to escort Kaia home, much to the chagrin and dismay of Kaia’s family and friends. He wheeled her to his truck as she held Madison on her lap in a car seat and helped buckle both of them into safety belts.
“You’ll have to give me directions to your house, love. I know it’s in Spring Valley,” he spoke up as he slid into the cab of his truck beside his daughter.
“I will.” Kaia replied tersely, still reluctant to let him know where she lived. “You didn’t have to do this, Chance. Mom and Dad would’ve brought me home. It would’ve given Dad an excuse to drive my car.”

“I’m happy to do this.” Chance smiled. “I want to spend time with you and Madison.”

Kaia sighed, “I know, but…”

“No buts, Kaia. We need this. We both need to heal.”

“Why in the hell do you need to heal?” she retorted, her nerves short. “You weren’t the victim. I was.”

“I know that. You remind me of it everyday. I’m to blame. I accept that, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt me too. I inflicted unnecessary pain upon myself,” he explained. “And on you. Letting you go was the hardest thing I have ever done and getting you back hasn’t been easy either. You blaming me gets us nowhere.”

“I know. I know, but it’s hard for me to forgive and forget.”

“I didn’t think it would be easy. Nothing good, nothing worth having, ever comes easy.” Chance opined. “My dad used to tell me that all the time while I was growing up, especially when I struggled to lose all that weight.”

Kaia nodded and sat back in the seat, relaxing. She directed him to her house and held her breath as they drove up to it. She wondered if he would remember.

“I see you’ve done well for yourself,” he spoke up.

“I told you I was given a raise and a promotion. I’m head of my department at work.” Kaia replied, tersely.

“Must’ve been some raise,” he quipped.

“Yes.”

“Can I ask something, hon?”

“Sure.”

“Is this the house you wanted me to look at when we decided to buy?” Chance asked.

“Yes, it is.”

He shook his head, wishing they had bought it together. “It’s nice.”

“Yes, I like it.”

“Then that’s all that counts, darling,” he replied, “Do you need my help carrying anything?”

“I can manage.”

“No, you get the diaper bag and let me carry Madison’s car seat. It’s heavy and you aren’t allowed to be lifting heavy things.”

“She isn’t that heavy, Chance.” Kaia retorted, giving him a look of exasperation.

“Humor me!” he quipped.

“Whatever!”

“Kaia, I want to do this! Quit being stubborn!” he retorted as his hand grasped the handle on Madison’s car seat.

Kaia handed him Madison with a scowl and headed for her front door. She shook her head, cursing under her breath. Opening the door, she walked into her foyer and sighed. A dull ache coursed through her body. She clenched her teeth and let out a harsh growl.

“Kaia, what’s wrong?” Chance asked as he set Madison’s car seat down and rushed over to her.

“Nothing. I’m okay. It’s just a little pain,” she replied. “It’s typical after having a baby.”

“Maybe you should sit down and relax. Let me take care of you.”

A voice came from the family room, drawing closer. “You really should take it easy, hun.” Carson spoke up.

“Hi!” Kaia smiled, “How long have you been here?”

“About an hour. I was talking to your dad,” Carson replied as he hugged Kaia tightly, lifting her feet up from the floor. ” Where’s Madison? I can’t wait to see her!”

“Sorry, son, but Grandpa gets first dibs on his lovely new grandbaby!” Kaia’s step-dad, Christopher spoke up.

“Of course, I can hold her another time.” Carson backed off. Kaia handed Madison to her dad. “Where’s Mom?”

“In the kitchen, honey, taking care of lunch.”

“Hello, Mr. Marshall.” Chance spoke up, not liking the fact that Carson was present.

“Good day, Chance. Thanks for bringing my grandbaby home.” Christopher replied. “I could’ve done that, though.”

“I wanted to. After all, Madison is my daughter.” Chance said, feeling a mix of anger and discomfort. He shook his head and tapped his foot, impatiently as he watched Kaia jovially chat with Carson. The quiet evening he had envisioned alone with Kaia and their beautiful child had disappeared like a puff of smoke. He shot a nasty look at Carson who returned the look, snickering.

As Christopher took the baby into the family room and Kaia entered the kitchen to help her mother, Carson spoke up, “Jealous?” he scoffed at Chance who walked over to him, gritting his teeth.

“What the hell do you think you are doing here?” Chance snarled, viciously. “Kaia is mine!”

Carson snorted with a chuckle, his eyes twinkling with mirth. “The joke’s on you, jackass. Oh, didn’t you know? Kaia invited me. Yeah, she called me from the hospital this morning and asked me to come over.”

Chance exhaled deeply, “And you just had to rush right over, didn’t you? Do you think it means she wants you? Prefers you to me? It doesn’t! She’s my woman. She loves me. You might as well just leave,” he retorted, reminding him who’d won her.

“Is that the best you can do?” Carson shot back, eying Chance with a smirk. “It seems you’ve lost your touch. We all know you can be nastier than that.”

Chance chuckled, “I thought I’d go easy on you since I have what you never will.”

“Don’t do me any favors. You may have Kaia blinded, but I can see right through you.”

“You sound like the one who is jealous. I think you are imagining things. I love her and if you can’t accept that, then she doesn’t need you as a friend. You know nothing about me. I would give anything for her. Kaia is my life.” Chance replied, ” Plus weren’t you at the club last night with some trashy bimbo all over you?”

“Yes, I was out on a date. I am allowed to do that,” Carson answered honestly.

“Yet you pine for my woman, for something you can’t have!” Chance rebuked, snarling at Carson.

“So what’s your point? What do you want?”

“I want you out of here!” Chance stated, emphatically.

“Now who’s jealous? I’m a threat and you know it. I’ll leave when Kaia tells me to and no sooner.”

“Fine. Have it your way, but remember, when you do leave, I’ll still be here,” he retorted and walked away, joining Kaia in the kitchen with her mother. He walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her shoulders, gently kissing her cheek.

Kaia wriggled out of Chance’s embrace and stepped to the stove to stir the simmering sauce. “Smells good, Mom. I can’t wait to eat,” she said.

“It should be done soon, honey.” Caroline replied, “Where’s your father?”

“In the family room with Madison.”

“Will you keep an eye on lunch while I go see my granddaughter?”

“Of course, I will, Mom.” Kaia smiled, as she continued to stir the marinara sauce.

Chance stepped to her side, puzzled by her actions. “Can I ask you something, hon?”

“You just did.”

He let out a scoff. “Seriously?”

“Go ahead.”

“Why did you ask Carson to come over?”

“Jealous?” Kaia countered as she glanced up at him, seeing the hurt look on his face.

“No, I’m not, but I’d hoped we’d be able to have some private time with our daughter,” he retorted. “You act like you don’t want me here. Tell me now.”

“Tell you what, Chance?”

“Whether or not I’m wanted here. I need to know.”

“I told you that you didn’t have to bring me home. It’s rather uncomfortable having you in my home, but for our daughter’s sake, I’ll get used to it.” Kaia replied, testing his feelings.

“Do you want me to leave?”

“Don’t ask me that, Chance. Don’t hand me that loaded gun. If I say no, it’ll be like inviting you to be here whenever you want, but if I say yes, it’ll mean I have to unnecessarily hurt you which I don’t want to do.” Kaia replied, shaking her head. “You put me in a difficult spot when you ask me that. Perhaps you should spend this time with your daughter.”

He nodded, sadly, “But why ask him over?”

“I promised him a while back that he could be here when I brought her home and I knew it meant a lot to him. I couldn’t break that.”

“Yet you have no qualms hurting me.” Chance shot back.

“That’s no fair. Who hurt who to begin with?” Kaia retorted, as she picked up a spoon and jabbed his shirt with it.

“Is that what this is all about? I said I was sorry. I apologized for my stupidity. What more do you want, Kaia? I’ve suffered, too.” Chance replied through gritted teeth. “I love you and I need you, but I’m starting to feel like I’m beating my head against a brick wall and I don’t like that. You don’t need to play this game with me!”

“I’m not playing a game with you. Do me a favor and give me some space. Spend time with your daughter!”

“Fine, but what about family time? Time for you, me and Madison to spend together?” Chance asked, unwilling to give up.

“We have plenty of time for that so quit pushing before I have to ask you to leave,” she retorted.

“Fine, I’ll leave,” he shot back as he turned on his heel and walked away. “Proves you didn’t want me here anyway.”

He made it to the front door before she caught up to him. “Chance,” she called out as he opened the door and stepped out into the courtyard.

“If you wanted to hurt me, you succeeded,” he said softly as he turned back to face her. “I didn’t think it was possible from someone as sweet as you.”

“Chance,” she repeated.

He pulled her to him, their eyes meeting in a brilliant stare. He raised his hands up and brushed the back of his fingers softly across her cheek, caressing her ever so lovingly. Then he lowered his gaze to her trembling mouth and sought out her lips with his.

Capturing them, he kissed her lightly, gently parting them as he deepened the spectacular kiss. He feasted on her passion, taking her to new heights as he mesmerized her through the heady kiss. His arms enveloped her as he pulled her as deep into his embrace as he could. Plying her tender mouth with utter gentleness, he swept her senses into oblivion and left her breathless as he broke the steamy kiss.

“Now tell me to leave,” he whispered against her swollen lips.

Kaia shuddered with bliss. “Don’t go,” she murmured. “Stay!”

“I’d love to stay, dollface, but I want you and Madison to myself. I’ll let you have your time with your parents and when they’re gone, I’ll be here.” Chance replied as he bestowed one last kiss on her and walked away, leaving her bewildered.

“Chance…come back!” Kaia called his name a third time as she watched him climb into the cab of his truck and start the engine. He waved and drove away, leaving Kaia dumbfounded. “Wait? What just happened here? I can’t believe he actually left?!?!?”

She turned and walked back into the house, deeply lost in her thoughts as she made her way back into the kitchen. She stood at the stove in disbelief that he’d actually left when she asked him to stay. How had he managed to turn the tables on her like that? She had wanted him to be there with her from the time he’d showed up at the hospital to take her home. She had wanted to cuddle up on the couch with him and share the embrace with their daughter. Kaia mentally kicked herself, knowing she’d done the wrong thing. Why did she have to try to make him jealous? Why did she have to test him, his feelings? She knew he loved her. Hadn’t he already proved that to her? But hadn’t he hurt her needlessly? Shouldn’t she feel wary of him? Shouldn’t she feel the need to make him suffer as she had? Kaia shook her head, wondering what that would prove. Would that prove she could stoop as low as he once had. No, she thought, I won’t do that. That wouldn’t be right.

She jumped as a hand caressed her back, bringing her out of her thoughts. “You looked like you were a million miles away.” Carson stated.

“Yeah, I guess I was.”

“A penny for your thoughts?” he offered.

“They aren’t worth that much!” Kaia chuckled, as a smile crossed her face.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. I was just thinking.”

“About?” Carson questioned, knowing nothing was really something.

“Take a guess!”

“Chance, huh?” He nodded. ” Where’d he go?”

“He left.”

“Really? What happened? Couldn’t he take it?” Carson smirked.

“I heard every word of that little argument you two had. Don’t egg him on, Carson. I love him and want him in my life, but I’m afraid of rushing things with him. I don’t want you two arguing over me.”

“If you want him so much, why am I here then?” he asked, cocking an eyebrow.

“I wanted to test him, to see how he’d react and I figured he would react the way he did. Plus your friendship means a lot to me.”

“So you used me, right?”

“Well…”

“Kaia, that’s wrong!”

“I know and I’m really sorry. I won’t do it again!” Kaia replied, apologetic.

“You had better not or I will tell him!”

“You wouldn’t!”

“I would,” he chuckled. “Now is lunch almost ready? I am hungry!”

Kaia laughed at him, “Yes, will you help me put it all together?”

“It would be my pleasure!”

Kaia served lunch and laid Madison down in her bassinet in the family room Caroline, Christopher and Carson sat down at the table to enjoy a meal of spaghetti with marinara sauce and meatballs, garlic breadsticks and tossed salad. They chatted genially while eating.

“Honey, where’d Chance go?” Caroline asked, being forthright at it.

“He left. He became mad with my indifference towards him. He wanted me and Maddie all to himself.” Kaia replied.

“Didn’t he know your father and I have been here since you delivered?”

“Yes, Mom, he knew. After all, he met you at the hospital.”

“What did he expect? That we’d be gone already? Doesn’t he realize that we’d stay a few more days?” her dad added.

“I don’t know what he expected, but I was dumb to act like I did.” Kaia admitted, “I want him here!”

“Call him.” Carson suggested.

“I can’t. He’ll think I’m playing some kind of game.”

“Maybe that’s what he wants. Trust me, I’m a guy. I’d want the woman I loved to call me after something like this. You tried to make him jealous and it worked. Now perhaps it is time to apologize.” Carson opined.

“Mom?” Kaia whined, “What do I do?”

“You always told me what a good catch he was and as much as I think this young man here is good for you, you know in your heart that Chance is the only one for you. I wouldn’t let him get away from you.” Caroline replied.

“Princess, I remember not being too fond of him when you told your mother and I what had happened with the break up and about your pregnancy, but at the hospital I spoke to him about his true feelings for you one night while we were both out in the hall and he told me how much he loved you. I believe he was genuine.” Christopher said, “He’d be a good son-in-law.”

“But for now, let him suffer a bit.” Carson chuckled, his eyes smiling and full of mirth.

“Carson, I know you’ve expressed an interest in Kaia. Does this bother you?” Caroline asked.

“Somewhat, yeah, but I want her to be happy. I’ve known from day one how she felt about him. I had my hopes that she and I would be more than friends, but it just wasn’t meant to be,” he replied. “I love her dearly and she knows I’ll be here for her.”

“Kaia has a twin sister, Kara.” Caroline added.

“Oh no, Mom. He wouldn’t be interested in her.” Kaia interjected with a shake of her head. “Kara and I may be twins, but we are nothing alike.”

“Exactly. She told be all about Kara, but I could never be interested in her.” Carson agreed.

“I just thought since you and Carson wouldn’t ever be getting married, I could introduce you to her sister. I think you’d be a wonderful son-in-law.” Caroline replied, seriously.

Kaia choked on a mouthful of salad and coughed. ” Mom!”

“I’m flattered you think so highly of me, but I think sweet Kaia would disown me if I ever considered her sister. That’s pretty taboo as far as I’m concerned.”

“And she did tell me she would like to come down and visit you after you had your baby,” her mother added, oblivious to Carson’s disinterest.

“Why now? She never wanted to see me before,” Kaia scoffed, rolling her eyes, “but I get it. I’m successful. I have my own house and a great career and she can’t stand it, right?”

“Or maybe it’s because she wants to see her niece. You two have something in common now. You are both unwed mother’s and I know you love Autumn. She was tickled pink over the birthday gift you sent her a few months ago.”

Kaia shot her mom a look. “Heaven forbid that Kara and I having kids outside of marriage gives us a common bond. Do me a favor, Carson dear. Let’s go get married.” Kaia snickered.

“As much as I’d love to marry you, my sweet, I think Chance would whip my ass.” Carson chuckled as he glanced Kaia over head to toe and wondered how much Kara physically looked like Kaia. She caught that gleam in his eye and raised an eyebrow, curious of his thoughts then she shook her head as she guessed what he was thinking.

“Carson Allen Brice, get that thought out of your head about my sister!” Kaia exclaimed.

“Just curious!”

“About what?”

“Are you two identical?” Carson asked, knowing he was treading on thin ice with that inquiry.

“No, we are fraternal. Although we look more alike now than we did growing up. We were nothing alike back then. Kara is alittle more fair. She is a natural blonde, blue eyed and manages to keep her peachy complexion without trying. Me, I was dark haired, hazel eyed with a darker complexion which meant I always tanned well. Not that I spent a lot of time outside while growing up. As heavy as I was, it was difficult to run and play with the other kids. Kara was always stick thin.” Kaia replied.

“Is she pretty stuck on herself?” he asked, trying to get a measure on Kara.

“Very. She’s incredibly conceited and shallow. It’s all about money and looks to her. If you have a nice car and money to spend on her, she’ll be all over you, but she never stays with one guy for very long.” Kaia explained, “Saying she is superficial doesn’t even come close to describing her.”

“Kara has always been very materialistic, though we didn’t raise our children to be that way.” Christopher added.

“Well, there’s always a rotten apple in every barrel.” Kaia quipped, wryly. “She flipped when she saw a picture of Chance I’d sent Mom. She made the comment that she could steal him from me in two minutes flat.”

“You are lucky she wasn’t around when he and you split up or she might have succeeded. I can imagine him doing her to spite you.” Carson pointed out.

“And I’d have never forgiven him. There would have been no ‘chance’ in hell for Chance if he’d have screwed my nasty sister.”

“Kaia Dawn!” Caroline snapped.

“I only speak the truth,” she retorted impishly.

The older woman shook her head in disbelief, “It’s hard to believe you two are sisters!”

“Especially since I get along with my other siblings real well.”

“Speaking of them, next school vacation they all want to come down to see you and Madison.”

“I’ll be happy to have them here. It’s been forever since I last seen them.”

“Brandon was going to come down with us this time, but couldn’t miss his college classes. Finals are close.” Christopher had spoke up as he pushed his plate away and patted his stomach. “Good lunch.”

“What has he been majoring in?” Kaia asked laughing, “Besides the opposite sex?”

“Architecture and he is still seeing the same girl he has for the past couple years.”

“Wow, that’s great. He always did like to build and design ever since he was a little squirt.” Kaia said as she heard Madison let out a squall. “I’d better get her. Sounds like she’s hungry.”

“Do you mind if your mother and I take your car and have a look around town?” Christopher asked, itching to drive his daughter’s Lexus.

Kaia laughed, “Never thought I’d hear my dad asking to borrow the car? It used to be me begging to borrow theirs.”

“Quite a change, huh?”

“Definitely. Let me get you the keys.” Kaia picked Madison up out of the bassinet then located her purse and pulled out her keys. “Try to take it easy, okay?”
